Do you feel like the world is happening to you right now and you don’t have any control? I am not the bossy type and definitely do not like bossing others around or trying to control them (which makes remote learning aka home schooling three kids very difficult haha). However, I do like feeling like I have control over some aspects of my own life. By the way, that is really hard to come by at the moment with six of us home all day since March, events cancelled, sports up in the air, and not a whole lot of places to go.
The chaos in the world is making it seem as though I have zero control over anything. If I spend too much time scrolling through social media, listening to the news, or talking to someone about politics I start to feel so overwhelmed and like there’s no end in sight. I am sure you are feeling pretty close to the same thing or you wouldn’t be reading this right now.
The fact is, there’s a lot going on in this world right now that we don’t actually have control over.
There are so many issues that feel so confusing as to which stand to take, and this global pandemic is really starting to put a damper on life and who knows if we will ever get back to life as we used to know it? Is this our new normal?
It’s enough to make a person want to crawl in a hole and not come out until 2021 (please be normal 2021). So I decided to do something about how I was feeling. There really are a lot of things out of our control but there are some things that we do have control over every single day. I am sure there are more than five but when everyone needs the computer at the same time for school, I only had time to write about these five. Here’s what I came up with.
5 Things You Can Control Right Now In A World That Feels Out Of Control.
1. What you consume.
You have control over what you’re watching, reading, eating, and listening to. Be careful to consume media that uplifts, inspires, and entertains. Only watch the news when you are feeling emotionally strong. For instance, right now, dramas like Grey’s Anatomy are too much for me. I just want mindless comedies that I don’t have to think too much about or feel sad. I only follow accounts on social media that steer clear of current affairs and teach me things I want to learn. Read more about curating your social media feed here. I am choosing foods that bring me energy, happiness, and health. What are you consuming? Does it bring calmness? Does it bring clarity? Does it bring energy?
2. Where you spend your energy.
You have control over what you’re giving your time and energy to. I mentioned having my whole family home since March. Normally I love a spotless house but I quickly realized early on in quarantine that it was sapping all of my energy to keep my house exactly how I wanted it. I had to let some things slide to preserve my energy. Let’s face it, six people home all the time can get a little messy, and in the grand scheme of things I could let it go for awhile. I also decided to make the most of everyone being home and use my energy on family bonding activities and building those relationships. So ask yourself, what do you want to spend your precious energy on? Does it bring you joy? Does it feel worthwhile?
3. What you think about.
You have control over your thoughts. Maybe not the first thought because our human brain just pops those first thoughts in, but you can control whether or not you entertain that thought. You can switch it to a more positive, relevant thought. You can read more about changing your thoughts in my Ebook, I’m Not Beautiful Like You I’m Beautiful Like Me. Does thinking about Covid-19 give you anxiety? Does thinking about the kids never going back to school drive you to eat all of the chocolate in the house? Or is that just me? Steer your brain to think about things that make you feel more calm, or ways you can find more peace and joy. Or ways you can make a positive difference in the world right now.
4. How you treat others.
You have control over how you are treating others during this time. I get it, we are all feeling on edge, more stressed, and probably a little crabby. Kindness goes a long ways for you and the people you’re caring for though. You get to control how you treat them. Do you want to feel a closer connection to the people around you? How can you treat them to accomplish that? I know for me it helps when I wake up in the morning and decide to choose happy. When I am choosing happy, I tend to show kindness to others easier.
5. How you choose to react.
You have control over how you choose to react to the people, news, events, and decisions being made in the world right now. For instance, you hear something on the news that makes your blood really boil. You have the choice to react in anger or rage. Which doesn’t really do any good. Since you’re not effecting the people in the news story, you’re effecting the people close to you. How could you react in a way that honors your feelings but doesn’t effect those close to you? Do your reactions feel in line with your inner thoughts and beliefs?
So there you have it. My list of five things you can control in a world that feels out of control right now.
Also don’t forget to take care of yourself. What are some things you can do that you consider self care? Maybe sit down and compile a list just for you that you can refer to when needed. We will get through this! We can do hard things my friend.
